Helping Businesses Leverage Foreign Trained Professional Talent

Toronto Board of Trade has launched the Employer’s Resource Directory: Helping Businesses Leverage Foreign Trained Professional Talent. This exciting initiative is a component of the Board’s new Global Diversity @ Work program, aimed at connecting you with region-wide services to support you with building your businesses and managing diverse work environments.

Today, not only are we seeing diversity as a growing trend in our city, the region has become home to a rich resource pool of well-educated and highly qualified individuals from all over the world. However, skilled immigrant talent remains largely untapped as many employers miss out on this opportunity due to the limited knowledge and experience they have when it comes to recruiting, retaining, and integrating skilled immigrants. In fact, according to the Board’s 2010 report on Lifting All Boats: Promoting Social Cohesion and Economic Inclusion in the Toronto Region, the underutilization of the education and skills of internationally educated individuals is costing the city $1.5 to 2.5 billion a year.

The Board recognizes that there has been a considerable lack of information available for employers to help them access local resources aimed at making it easier for them to tap into skilled immigrant talent. In our efforts to take action on this issue, the Board is releasing the Employer’s Resource Directory as a very timely resource that employers can use to diversify their workforce and grow their business potential for the future.

The Employer’s Resource Directory is a well-organized and easy-to-use directory designed for employers to access the resources they need, whether they are looking for cost-effective solutions to help with recruiting and selecting qualified immigrant talent, services to help them verify the Canadian equivalencies of foreign credentials, or practical guides, strategies and best practices on how to successfully manage a diverse workforce. The Board’s Global Diversity @ Work program is aimed at helping small and medium-sized enterprises alleviate and overcome the common challenges they face in recruiting, retaining, and integrating skilled immigrant talent in the GTA. This program is funded in part by the Global Experience @ Work, an initiative of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, with support and funding from the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.

The Global Diversity @ Work program also includes an exciting new series of seminars and webinars designed to provide business owners, managers, and human resource professionals with practical information on the benefits of business diversity.
