GTA Mayors Join Hands to Promote Canada-China Trade
August 20, 2009, Mississauga - The Confederation of Greater Toronto Chinese Business Association is organizing a trade mission visiting China in 2010. Objective of the mission is to promote Canada China business and to support the Canada Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Mayors or senior city officials from the Greater Toronto Area will be part of the delegation.
During the 10-day visit between May 19 to May 30, 2010, the mission will visit Shanghai, Beijing, GTA sister cities including Chongqing, Shijiazhuang, Wuhan and Xiamen, with Hong Kong as the last stop of the mission. Business delegates from GTA will have ample opportunities to meet with local Chinese cities officials and business representatives.
“World Expo 2010 China Mission is a milestone development of local Chinese business associations,” says Stephen Chu, President of Mississauga Chinese Business Association (MCBA). “We have been successful in bridging the governments and the Chinese business community. We are now playing a bigger role in linking the Canadian and Chinese businesses.”
Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga and Mayor Dave Barrow of Richmond Hill have confirmed their participation in this mission. Mayors from other cities including Mayor David Miller of Toronto, Mayor Frank Scarpitti of Markham, and Mayor Linda Jackson of Vaughan are still working on their schedules to fit in the Mission.
“With the support of the municipal governments, a trade mission of this scale will certainly bring businesses back to Canada, “says Ben Leung, President of Richmond Hill & Markham Chinese Business Association (RHMCBA), who visited China with Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti in 2008 and witnessed several successful deals between Chinese companies and Markham corporations.
“This will also see the first time to have mayors or senior city officials from different cities in Greater Toronto Area to visit China together, “says Alphai Lai, President of Scarborough York Region Chinese Business Association (SYRCBA).
As per size of the delegation, Ms. Benny Cheung, President of Toronto Chinese Business Association (TCBA), is optimistic. “We are also inviting business groups from other ethnic communities like Italian, Portuguese and Indian to join us. You may see over 50 business delegates from different industries taking part in this Team GTA mission,” says Ms. Cheung.
CGTCBA was established in 1998 and consists of MCBA, RHMCBA, SYRCBA and TCBA. The forming of this Confederation marked an important step towards unity and created a valuable support network for the Chinese business community.
